Several years ago I founded a company called Kidrobot that grew to over a hundred employees.  That was an interesting experience, but one of the things that I learned almost immediately is that most businesses need to grow very quickly, or die.  It’s just inherent in their DNA.  

That sense of frantic speed, of barreling forward and not looking back, is echoed in the days and hours of the lives that most of us are now living.  The ride is thrilling, but at the same time the rush often prevents us from stopping to enjoy the scenery along the way.  

I founded Budnitz Bicycles with the just opposite in mind. Our superfast, beautiful, and lightweight titanium bicycles are meticulously handbuilt with top components to last a lifetime.   We named our first bicycles Model No.1 and No.2 because they’re an almost perfect ride (our customers agree — many own several of our bikes). And the No.1 that you buy today will not look very different from the No.1 we’ll be selling ten years from now.  It’ll still be riding beautifully, too.

When I head out on the road nowadays, I remind myself to take my time.  I do love speed, feeling the breath leave my mouth, the wind rushing by!   But most days, I move a little slower, allowing my destination to come to me, instead of racing to meet it.

And when I sit down to design a new bicycle, I do the same.

The road is the destination.
