“The man who made bicycles beautiful again.”
– Phaidon

Budnitz Bicycles had two wonderful write-ups this week on Phaidon & Bike Radar.

Suddenly there are piles of notes in my inbox from journalists wanting to understand where our small bicycle company is heading.

This question totally misses the point.

Focusing on the destination is like going out for a long ride and only thinking about how quickly you’ll get to the end. That’s racer mentality. Racing focuses on hydration & heart rate & winning, but totally ignores the pleasures of the journey itself. When we’re racing we only think about the finish, but it’s on the path where we spend most of our lives.

It is true that it’s fun sometimes to get out there and haul ass — to feel the wind on your face and notice the breathe as it leaves your lungs. And it’s also true that our bicycles move very, very fast. The handmade titanium frames on our Budnitz Model No.1 and Model No.2 weigh less than 3.5 pounds.

But our bicycles are fun to ride slowly, too. They’re extremely beautiful and very comfortable machines. Our trademark split-tube titanium cantilever frame just eats road shock.

My very favorite rides are the ones when I just hop on my bike with a credit card in my pocket, with no destination in mind and no time frame for getting there. I arrive when I arrive.

Then I’m right where I want to be, enjoying the ride.

— Paul Budnitz, Founder

———————————————

NEW STUFF NEWS:

Produced in extremely limited quantities, at present there are only two bicycles like this in existence. One has been sold.
